Ilmari Tapiovaara was a Finnish interior designer and architect, since the 1930s.He based his creations on the Nordic Design principle simplicity at its best. He always emphasized that nature is the best source of inspiration for creationnamely, its design, functionality, form, material, etc. In Baltic cities, the streets were mostly dark, illuminated only by the light escaping through the windows of homes and shops. The light travelled from the inside outward. Itstirreda novel idea in Tapiovaara to create his design for a lamp. He was also fascinated by the1912 childrens literature, Maya the Bee (Maija Mehilinen in Finnish). So he created a honeycomb-like structure for the lamp and named it after the friendly kids character. In 1955, it was manufactured by Asko/Hienoter,with two incandescent bulbs shedding warm light.
Maija table lamp was re-launched by Santa & Cole in the 1990s, retaining the original bee-hive like structure as Santa & Cole Maija Table Lamp. Metal discs are stacked one on top of the other to form the lampshade. It houses a module of forty-eight LEDs, which gives out a radiant light. The disc has crevices on top to allow the light to spread upward. Like the Baltic windows, the lampshade filters out the peaceful inner light. The lamp stands on a brass tripod with a matte finish. It comes in two color variants pure white and the original nude pink. Now, this creation is part of Santa Coles Design Classics collection.
