In the 1970s, a group of artisans and architects were considered rebellious for their fresh and unusual ideas. Angel Jov, who created the Santa & Cole Babel Table lamp in 1971, was one of them. His creation was considered disrespectful at that time for several reasons.

The term Babel refers to the biblical story of the Tower of Babel, which was left unfinished because of linguistic divisions among humans and their defiance of the almightys command. In contrast, the Santa & Cole Babel Table lamp symbolizes a completed tower with a divine light shining from it. Alabaster column, a material predominantly not used in the period, was used to create it.When compared to the robust marble or the honorable onyx, it was regarded as tacky. But by the early 1980s, the scenario changed.Now, alabaster is considered as an ideal rock for carving.

Inspired by the Arts Dcoratifs a style described by rich colors, bold geometry, and decadent detailing Angel Jov created a simple design with geometric lines.The intricate curves and usage of unlikely materials might have shadowed its success when it was created, but now the craftsmanship has made it a timeless iconic creation. The designers, namely Angel Jov, are regarded as pioneers of art. The lamp is handcrafted, so each is unique in some way. Thelower half of the lamp holds the light socket. The tower-like lampshade hides it completely. The light is dimmable using a switch provided in the cord. So you can adjust it to a bright setting as a reading lamp or a diffused night light.
