The Ala lamp, designed by Carlo Nason, emerged at the end of the 1960s and was initially produced between 1969 and 1970. Its name was derived from a familiar gesture that can be made by crossing one’s hands, imitating the graceful movement of bird wings. It also draws inspiration from the Chinese Puppet game, where the shadow of a flying bird is projected onto a wall.

The design of Ala centers around a cylindrical structure that houses the light source, along with two folded disks that are skillfully joined together. The true enchantment lies within this composition. Remarkably, there are no hinges or bearings involved; instead, the lamp relies on the harmonious interplay of geometric elements to achieve its dynamic balance.nd immerse yourself in the charm of a bygone era brought to life in your modern interiors.

About the Designer

Carlo Nason, the Italian designer, was born in 1935 in Murano into a family renowned for their expertise in glassmaking. His father, Vincenzo Nason, operated the esteemed glass company Nason/Moretti and established another glass company called Vincenzo Nason & C in 1941. Growing up in this environment, Carlo received early training in the art of glassblowing, acquiring knowledge of glass properties and various techniques used in molding and decorating.

Carlo Nason’s initial design creations date back to 1959 when he crafted a collection of blow-molded vases for V Nason & C. These early works are now showcased at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York. Fueled by his passion for design, particularly an affinity for clean and geometric forms, Nason made a pivotal decision in the 1960s to diverge from his family’s business, which primarily focused on traditional and ornate decorative objects. He redirected his attention towards modernist glass lighting design.

Initially, Nason aimed to produce his designs in small series by himself. However, his spirit of experimentation and innovative approach quickly caught the attention of A. V. Mazzega, a renowned Murano glass manufacturer. Inviting him to collaborate on new collections, this partnership extended from 1965 until the 1980s, resulting in a range of iconic lighting designs that remain highly sought after today. Alongside his work with A. V. Mazzega, Nason also created designs for other esteemed Murano glassworks companies.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Nason continued to create designs while also taking on roles as a consultant for Casinos Austria and later as a photographer. His works have been exhibited in numerous museums, as well as art and design galleries in Paris, Milan, and New York, showcasing his enduring impact on the design world.
