During World War II, while serving as an Army staff sergeant, he created a light using a length of copper wire attached to a wall, bent and wired to a bulb at the end. Later, when he set shop after the war, it became the swing arm lamp. The shaft had three sections with the middle section acting as the swivel.The upper section rotated, and it helped optimize the light in any direction required.
